The number of online romance scams reported to the police for the first two months this year has surged by nearly 30 percent compared with the same period last year, according to the police department.
100 cases of online romance scam have been reported in January and February this year.
The amount of money involved in such scams has dropped by almost 15 percent, from HK$25 million last year dropped to HK$21 million this year.
“That means more victims have reported their cases promptly and prevented monetary loss,” The police department wrote on their Facebook page.
The police said people should exercise caution when making new friends online, and stay mindful of scammers who use different excuses to ask victims for money.
“Please also remind your family and relatives to avoid falling prey to such scams. When in doubt, please immediately call the “Anti-Scam Helpline” at 18222 for more information.” The police wrote.
