Sex robots are set to rival dating app Tinder after a surge in popularity during lockdown, a doll manufacturer has bragged.
RealDoll’s production manager, Mike Wilson, says sales are continuing to soar for the brand’s range of AI products during the coronavirus pandemic.
The deadly disease has forced people around the world to stay indoors, pretty much killing casual dating as we know it.
Dates arranged through Tinder, a popular swiping app, will have undoubtedly plunged throughout the crisis.
But Wilson claims people have opened their minds to sex robots when dating humans hasn’t been an option.
And he even believes RealDoll can rival Tinder, which itself revolutionised the dating scene around the world.
Speaking on the Two Girls One Mic podcast, Wilson said: “Ultimately when this whole thing started, we didn’t know how this was going to go for us, we’re a small company, about 20 people.
“But pretty much as soon as coronavirus hit and we were locked in, our sales skyrocketed and haven’t stopped.
“We’re about to give Tinder a run for their money for sure.”
He continued: “When this whole thing happened we shut down for two weeks, I was coming in and out, we had a few of the higher-ups coming in and out just to make sure everything was okay.
“But we shut down totally for two weeks and then we came back on multiple shifts, with some people working from home.”
Last week, Wilson revealed on the same podcast that one doll has been sold for an astonishing $100,000 (£80,000).
The doll was based on the comedian Whitney Cummings, who gave the company her permission to based the machine on her.
Asked what the most expensive doll it ever sold was, Wilson responded: “About $100,000. The doll was the Whitney Cummings doll, there is a Netflix special you should watch.
“It was her new stand-up, and she actually brings our robotic version of herself on stage. If you watch past the credits, you get to see behind the scenes.
“I’m in it, my staff members are in it, and I should say more than anything else that the quality of our products, it’s not just me, just the owner, every one of my team are all highly trained and they are amazing artists.
“Every so often it’s only so many faces to a company, it’s automatically assigned, I’m like dude I’ve got so people who have worked in Hollywood working on these things and they often don’t get the credit they deserve.”
