CLEVELAND, Ohio — Federal prosecutors brought new sex-trafficking charges against a Cleveland man already accused of shooting at federal agents during a raid at his home stemming from a human-trafficking probe.
Reuben Rankin, 34, faces charges of sex trafficking of a minor and production of child pornography. Those charges were added via a new indictment handed up Wednesday. A grand jury previously indicted him on weapons and assault charges stemming from the Oct. 30 pre-dawn raid.
Rankin trafficked the underage victim between May and September, according to the indictment.
He is scheduled to appear at an arraignment hearing Jan. 21 on the new charges. A conviction for sex trafficking carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 10 years in federal prison, while production of child pornography calls for a defendant to serve at least 15 years upon conviction.
His federal public defender declined comment.
Authorities said Rankin fired six shots from a car at a team of U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations agents conducting a raid at his house on Dove Avenue in the Union-Miles neighborhood.
Reuben Rankin’s brother Dominique Rankin was also arrested in the raid.
Both have criminal histories: Reuben Rankin for a series of violent crimes and thefts during a 14-year period and Dominique Rankin for a sex crime against a 5-year-old girl.
Dominique Rankin is in the Cuyahoga County Jail, being held for potentially violating the terms of his supervision for a 2019 conviction for failing to notify the sheriff of a change of address, which is required because of his sex offender status.
Common Pleas Judge Michael Shaughnessy reinstated Dominique Rankin’s supervision on Thursday, though he is still in jail pending a release plan, records show.
