CHANDLER, Ariz. (WEEK) – The son of University of Illinois head football coach Lovie Smith faces serious criminal charges in Arizona, including sex trafficking.
Mikal Smith is one of two people indicted for allegedly running an illegal prostitution ring between December of 2018 and September of last year, according to a news release issued Thursday by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich.
Smith and Aprel Mae Rasmussen are accused recruiting a woman to become a prostitute, then using “constant surveillance and threats of of retaliation to keep the victim under control.”
In addition to sex trafficking, Smith is charged with conspiracy, illegally conducting an enterprise, money laundering in the first degree, pandering, receiving earnings of a prostitute, threatening or intimidating.
Smith played college football at the University of Arizona, and also served as an assistant coach for his father when Lovie Smith was the Chicago Bears head football coach.
