MADISON (WKOW) — A Madison man has been found guilty of ten counts related to sex trafficking minors.

A jury returned the verdicts against 32-year-old James Coney after deliberating for five hours Monday.

The U.S. District Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin announced the decision in a press release.

Coney was found guilty of four counts of sex trafficking a minor, one count of sex trafficking a minor by force, one count of attempted sex trafficking a minor, and four counts of transporting a minor from Wisconsin to Illinois for the purpose of prostitution.

The jury found that between May 2017 and March 2018, Coney trafficked five minors and tried to traffic a sixth.

Prosecutors presented evidence at trial that they say showed that Coney used Backpage ads to arrange “dates” for the minor victims, collected the money and instructed the minors on what to do.

All six of the minors testified at the trial, the press release said.

Authorities began an investigation after one of a mother of one of the minors reported them missing to Fitchburg police. The girl was eventually found in Chicago where prosecutors say she had been with Coney.

Coney faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in federal prison.  A sentencing date has not been set.
