Christopher Dietzel, a PhD student in Educational Leadership at the University of McGill, will discuss safe mobile chatting. This presentation will cover a variety of topics related to social networking applications. First, Chris will discuss what consent looks like for users on these apps, both in online and offline spaces. Next, the presentation will consider intimacy on social networking apps, emphasizing the experiences of LGBTQ+ users, such as gay, bisexual, and queer men. Finally, Chris will discuss preliminary results from his doctoral research, which examines how negative practices, including discrimination and sexual violence, may occur as a result of using social networking apps. Overall, this session will cover problems associated with consent related to online profiles and online platforms, strategies that you can use to navigate potential problems, and suggestions of how to create safer spaces for users, both online and offline.
