Jack Whitehall Travels With My Father: Is Travels With My Father scripted? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father is back on Netflix and fans have looked forward to seeing the comedian in Australia with his dad, Michael Whitehall. In the series, Jack takes his father across the globe in a bid to ‘loosen him up’ and encourage him to see the world in a new light. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about whether the hilarious travel series is scripted.

Is Travels With My Father scripted?

Travels With My Father is now in its fourth season on Netflix and fans have fallen in love with the banter-filled relationship between Jack and his father Michael.

Many have commented on Michael’s quick wit and ability to outsmart his son at every given opportunity.

The connection between the father and son, and their effortless use of banter, seems too good to be true and fans are keen to know whether certain elements of the show are scripted.

Of course, fans of the series will know Jack narrates sections of each episode, in order to add context and explain what is happening during each activity.

The series has been described by many as a ‘part scripted sitcom’, as all the activities have been planned in advance. There will also be some prior knowledge as to how each scene will end.

However, it is believed that what happens in between is entirely off the cuff, and Michael has often shocked Jack with his behaviour.

In the first episode, Michael chased Jack through a forest with a large snake, whilst on a bush survival course.

He also embarrassed his son by attending a speed-dating session at a winery and began making suggestions on what Jack should be asking each woman.

Viewers took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the creation of the series, with one saying: “Travels With My Father is so obviously scripted.

“Their problems, the things they say, everything. It’s all set up. Not even a genuine travel show and it ruins the experience of trying to enjoy the actual places they visit.”

Commenting on the comedy element of the series, another viewer said: “VERY forced. I also am pretty sure that his father dressed up like this just for the show and I bet he probably never dresses up like that in his regular life.”

The producers of the travel sitcom have never divulged too much information about whether the series is scripted.

However, some fans have suggested it has become more scripted over time, with the fourth season in particular feeling rehearsed.

Viewers have used the example of when Michael dresses up as the Queen as part of a drag competition, saying he would not have done such a thing in everyday life.

Still, this has not stopped fans of the comedian tuning in as they still love the father and son relationship.

Other fans have understood part of the show is most likely scripted, but they still enjoy it for the humour.

One said in an IMDb review: “I’ve seen some reviews stating it is ‘painfully obvious’ that the show is scripted. Lol thanks for that captain obvious! “If people do not like this I can only assume they are lacking in a sense of humour. I however have laughed out loud numerous times.

“Maybe I just appreciate the dry British humour that I have always loved. Fantastic show.”

This is not the first time viewers have seen Michael and Jack working together on a show, as the pair have presented Backchat on the BBC since 2013.

They also have a one-off show called Christmas With My Father, which is a live show set during the festive period.

In an interview with The One Show Michael and Jack took part in a ‘soft eye contact’ challenge, and they discussed what winds each other up.

During the live interview, Jack and former theatrical agent Michael bounced off each other and had the whole studio laughing.

The Netflix show made its debut in 2017 and fans loved their awkward and quirky encounters along the way.

While some parts of the show may seem scripted, the series has received plenty of praise as it is now in the top 10 on Netflix in the UK following the season four release.

Jack is on Instagram and he shared a photo of himself with his father on a camel ride from season four, saying: “Get over hump day with some father and son bonding in the desert. Dry, arid, desolate and that’s just @fatherwhitehall.”
