OVBC, April 2021 – OrthoSpineNews

Elizabeth Hofheinz, M.P.H., M.Ed.

Years ago when Dr. Zeev Kain was first implementing enhanced recovery initiatives within orthopedics in hospitals, he couldn’t help notice that “one hand wasn’t talking to the other.”

Zeev Kain, M.D., M.B.A., is a Chancellor’s Professor and Director of System Redesign & Value Based Healthcare at the Health Policy Research Institute at the University of California School of Medicine in Irvine, California. He notes, “There are sometimes dozens of people who are part of the care team…I noticed that most of them don’t actually talk to each other. The anesthesiologist doesn’t know the administrator’s role in the process and the surgeon doesn’t understand things from the perspective of the physical therapist. I could see that there was a substantial amount of room for improvement.”

And improve things he did, five years ago establishing the Interdisciplinary Conference on Orthopaedics Value-Based Care (OVBC), an event that has taken a sledgehammer to the silos in our field. The event, April 9-11, 2021, is held by the American College of Perioperative Medicine (ACPM) and Duke University School of Medicine.

A team approach

Dr. Kain, also an Adjunct Professor at Yale University and President of the ACPM states, “To foster an environment of interdepartmental communication, we strive to have institutions attend the OVBC in teams. In our experience, this makes it more likely that those individuals will return to their facilities and implement their newly acquired knowledge. In addition, during the conference we mix people up. For example, orthopedic surgeons are placed next to a nurse or executive…not an orthopedic surgeon colleague.”

The magic of “one-thirds”…like speed dating, but better

“Participants in the virtual OVBC meeting will encounter representatives who are one-third surgeons, one-third nurses, and one-third executives,” says Dr. Kain. “It is incredibly rare to have a hospital president sitting next to a pharmacist and listening intently about a vital issue that impacts them both. The OVBC is the sole orthopedic event to provide such an environment.”

And, since they are no longer hampered by the challenges of traveling to the conference, participants from around the globe can easily access the latest information from luminaries, including department chairs and healthcare executives. Some of these include representatives from HSS, Rothman, NYU, Columbia, UCSF, OrthoCarolina and many others.

Attendees will enjoy both plenary sessions as well as three parallel tracks that focus on various aspects of orthopedic value-based care: a clinical track, a financial track and an operational track. It will also include industry sponsored lectures that will be non-CME and can include the topic of choice.

Friday will be devoted to moving practices from hospital settings to the ASC while Saturday and Sunday will feature general sessions and three parallel tracks that focus on current and future rules and finance bundle payments, The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, and Merit Based Incentive Payments System.

Attendees will learn how to build all elements of a value-based-care system. Operational, financial and clinical. At the conclusion of the conference participants will understand an enhanced recovery model and have tools that create a better patient experience and make surgical care safer, more efficient and aligned in order to promote a better medical outcome at a lower cost.

Dr. Kain, “As we move towards evidence-based, standardized, patient-centered care, we must move as a team. In the vein of, ‘We don’t know what we don’t know,’ the novel ideas that can emanate from an intimate knowledge of the role of ‘the other’ on a care team remain to be revealed. We look forward to the fruits of our collective efforts.”

OVBC…taking a sledgehammer to the silos and seeding the future.
