The best dating shows to watch now Love Island is cancelled

Love Island has become a staple of the summer TV schedule – but now it’s been axed for 2020.

The series usually kicks off in June as a group of singles move into a Mallorcan villa looking for sun, fun and romance.

But as lockdown continues and social distancing measures look set to be in place for some time, the show’s format just isn’t ‘logistically possible’ this year, producers say.

They’ve vowed the ITV2 show will be back ‘stronger than ever’ next year – but until then fans will have to find their dose of escapism elsewhere.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up five alternative dating shows to watch instead this summer.

Too Hot to Handle

Too Hot to Handle – The Netflix dating show that’s being called the new Love Island

This new Netflix dating show has already been hailed the new Love Island – and there are certainly similarities between the two shows.

Like the ITV2 show, it’s got the fire pit, hot tub, communal bedroom, hideaway-style room, and a group of young, toned, tanned singletons dropped into a paradise resort together.

But the twist is that in this show, the contestants are doing everything they can NOT to sleep with each other – and form more meaningful emotional connections instead.

The incentive to stay away from each other is a $100,000 jackpot – which dwindles if any of the contestants enjoy any between-the-sheets action.

The eight episode series is available to stream now.

First Dates Hotel

First Dates Hotel

Fred and the First Dates Hotel team are back at the luxury Aquapetra Resort and Spa in Southern Italy, ready to welcome a new group of guests hoping to find a holiday romance.

Unlike the rather homogeneous cast of Love Island, the daters here are of all ages and backgrounds – and often have some heartbreaking personal stories that have led them here.

Guests are matched up for a blind dinner date in the hotel’s restaurant before getting to decide whether they’d like to meet again the next day for a second date.

Together with parent programme First Dates, it’s had an impressive success rate that has led to several engagements, marriages and even a baby.

Series 5 airs on Channel 4 on Thursdays at 9pm, and the first two episodes are available to catch up on All 4 now.

Love is Blind

Amber Pike and Matt Barnett attend Netflix’s Love is Blind VIP viewing party

American dating show Love is Blind was released Netflix in February and quickly became a hit.

If you haven’t seen it yet, the social experiment is hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey and sees a group of single men and women speed-date one another to find the person they want to marry.

The catch is they can’t meet until after they’ve got engaged, and the dates are held in pods where they can talk to – but can’t see – each other.

There are 10 episodes available to stream on Netflix now.

Five Guys A Week

Five Guys A Week star Hope

Channel 4’s latest dating show sees one single woman invite five men to move into her home and live with her for a week – all at the same time.

The contestants cook meals together, go on a group night out, and sleep on airbeds and sofas in a bid to win their host’s heart, with cameras following their every movement.

Each day she has to choose one of her new housemates to kick out until she’s left with her perfect match.

There are five episodes available to watch on All 4, each featuring a different group of hopeful singles.

Celebs Go Dating

Celebs Go Dating stars (from left): Jack, Lauren, Lee, Nathan, Megan, Lady Colin Campbell, Demi and Chloe

This E4 dating show is set in a celebrity dating agency, where star clientele are looking for love with ordinary members of the public.

It’s seen appearances from famous faces including Lee Ryan, from boyband Blue, Sugababes singer Mutya Buena, reality stars Joey Essex and Charlotte Crosby, and Olympic taekwondo fighter Jade Jones

All eight series are available on All 4, which should keep you going for a while.
