Directed by Vinil Mathew, the movie stars Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane in lead roles. Pannu plays the role of Rani, a beautiful and mysterious woman who loves reading Hindi-language thriller novels. She marries Rishu (Massey) who, despite his best efforts, isn’t able to impress his wife as much as he would like to. When Rishu dies in an explosion, she becomes a murder suspect. Her extramarital affair with Neel (Rane) further deepens police’s suspicion. However, from the trailer, it appears that Rishu might have faked his death in order to get back at Rani. In the second half of the trailer, he seems a different person, one who is out to exact revenge, than his simpler, sweet avatar in the first half.
If we are being honest, the movie has a certain Gone Girl vibe where the lead character fakes her disappearance in order to get back at her husband who has an extramarital affair. Haseen Dillruba seems to run along the same lines. However, Pannu’s character doesn’t appear completely innocent. It’s imperative to mention that Pannu and Massey’s performances are top notch and they are able to create quite an impact with just the trailer.
While Bollywood has its fair share of suspense thrillers, some of them are either remakes of Hollywood movies or end up botching the plot. However, in the recent past, movies like Ittefaq, Raat Akeli Hai and Mom have managed to impress the audiences with their tight storytelling and intrigue. In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, Pannu had said, “Hindi pulp fiction will have a strong influence on this film [Haseen Dillruba]. Again, this is something I haven’t done before.”
Haseen Dillruba will release on July 2nd, on Netflix India.
