STORRS — The blue-jarred candle burning in Dan Hurley’s office is called “confidence + freedom.” It produces scents of lavender, marine, oak moss and cedar that mingle with the powers of an aromatherapy machine situated on the other side of the room, where plumes of eucalyptus waft through the air. He enjoys pine and mint, too.

“And sometimes orange, you know,” Hurley says. He moves to the front of his desk. “Got my wellness jar here.”

Hurley pulls off a glass lid and sorts through revitalizing drink options.

“Got my Alpha Brain …”

That dietary supplement is thought to support cognitive function.

“I love my mushroom coffee …”

That “Superfood” is said to feature numerous health benefits, including a boost to the immune system.

Hurley shrugs and laughs, recognizing the picture brought into focus by this conversation, which in a roundabout way has to do with curbing the ferocity of one extreme with adherence to another.

Hurley is a man who coaches the UConn men’s basketball team while yelling and flailing and stomping to the limits of being allowed to continue participating. His actions and expressions are as close to memes and emojis as a human can make them.

Colorful, volcanic. All emotion, no filter. Eyes about to pop through his glasses. Hurley is a real-life exaggeration of what it is to be a coach hellbent on making every single basketball moment play out to script. He is relentless. He has coached 343 games in his 11-year college career. Returning home afterward has sometimes meant meeting the glare of his wife, Andrea.

“She would tell me, ‘That was embarrassing today. I know you want to win. You’re passionate about it. But today, it was embarrassing for us.’”
