COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Every October 3rd,Mean Girls fans commemorate the fateful day Aaron asked Cady what day it was.
Now, in 2023, October 3rd is known as World Romance Scam Prevention Day thanks to the group Advocating Against Romance Scammers, and the dating service Tinder and its parent company Match Group told Mean Girls actor Jonathan Bennett he can sit with them in a special partnership to spread awareness of online dating scams and toxic behavior.
“Fans have a lot of fun celebrating all their favorite memes and quotes every October 3, but it’s also important that we can take this day to acknowledge some important lessons about how we interact with others online,” Bennett said. “We want everyone to continue to recognize this day, while also being more aware of the types of common behaviors of online scammers to watch out for.”
This campaign follows a previous one by Match Group in January to help users learn ways to protect themselves from online scams. The company has taken proactive steps to keep users protective via measures likeselfie verification, video chat, and messages that pop up to warn users if certain language is detected in messaging.
The FBI says crypto scams such as “pig butchering” have totaled more than $3 billion taken from Americans by con artists who, upon first glance, mean well. Additionally, while the FBI finds older adults to be the most prone to falling victim to such scams, the percentage of younger adults who do is rising year to year.
“Advocating Against Romance Scammers created this day to help bring together every global entity affected by the scams to increase awareness and help others understand the severity of the controlled manipulation in order for the fraud to succeed,” Kathy Waters, Executive Director, Advocating Against Romance Scammers said in a press release.
Authorities want to remind anyone using these apps to never send money to anyone they don’t know, and to report anyone engaging in this type of behavior to keep the public protected.
