Tinder to introduce background checks on matches for US users – Hack | #tinder | #pof

Tinder users in Australia won’t have access to a new feature to conduct background checks on their potential partners.

Match Group, which owns Tinder and a number of other dating apps such as OK Cupid and Hinge, announced its partnership with Garbo – a not-for-profit online platform providing criminal background checks for Americans – on Monday.

If you or anyone you know needs help:

“Before Garbo, abusers were able to hide behind expensive, hard-to-find public records and reports of their violence; now that’s much harder,” said Kathryn Kosmides, Founder and CEO of Garbo.

“Being able to reach historically underserved populations is fundamental to Garbo’s mission and the partnership with Match will help us connect with these communities.”

Match Group says the background checks provided by Garbo collects “public records and reports of violence or abuse, including arrests, convictions, restraining orders, harassment, and other violent crimes.”

The new feature will be rolled out to Tinder users in the US later this year.

Garbo is not available in Australia as Australian states and territories do not publicly share the names or details of sexual offenders.

Match Group’s partnership with Garbo follows a number of safety changes at Tinder in recent months.

In December, Match Group ordered a comprehensive review of its “sexual misconduct reporting, moderation, and response processes.”

The announcement followed an investigation by triple j Hack and Four Corners in October which revealed Tinder was failing to adequately respond to survivors of sexual assault and allowing rapists to cover their tracks.

The joint investigation sparked a number of policy changes at Tinder and its rival dating app Bumble, including changes to the problematic “unmatch” function.

In a statement to Hack, a Tinder spokesperson said, “We plan to pilot this partnership in the US but will look for similar services for our international users.”
