A Westport man was arrested Thursday in connection with a sexual assault, police said.
Ashwin Mathur, 23, has been charged with third-degree sexual assault, second-degree unlawful restraint and impersonating a police officer, according to Lt. David Farrell, a spokesman for the department.
Mathur was released after posting a $25,000 bail and is due in Superior Court in Norwalk on Sept. 27.
The victim told investigators Aug. 8 that she had met Mathur through an online dating website and that the assault had taken place the previous day at the Westport Inn, Farrell said.
Mathur told the victim he was a police officer and displayed a badge when he picked her up to go to the inn, Farrell said. After detectives from Westport submitted the warrant for Mathur’s arrest, officers in Stamford stopped his vehicle in their town.
He was taken into custody without incident.
