The father of murdered Essex backpacker, Grace Millane has died, New Zealand police have confirmed.

David Millane has passed away in his home in Wickford earlier this week following a short battle with cancer.

The Mail Online reported that David Millane was diagnosed with cancer shortly after the trial of his daughter’s murder in New Zealand earlier this year.

Grace Millane who was from Wickford, was strangled to death in a hotel room in Auckland, New Zealand on her 22nd birthday back in December 2018.

After graduating from the University of Lincoln, Grace went on a backpacking trip across the world, when she was reported missing. Her family and friends had not heard from her on her birthday, so her father David, flew to New Zealand as local authorities searched for her.

Her body was later recovered in a shallow grave in a forest just outside Auckland.

A 27-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was jailed in February this year for at least 17 years following her murder.

The court heard how Grace went on a Tinder date with the man before her death.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard of New Zealand police, who led the investigation into Grace’s death said: ” NZ Police wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of David Millane who died earlier this week in his hometown in England.

“The Millane family had their lives turned upside down when David’s much loved and cherished daughter Grace was murdered while visiting New Zealand in December 2018.

“NZ Police worked closely with the Millane family as part of the investigation into Grace’s murder and provided victim support throughout the subsequent trial. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Gillian, Michael, Declan and the rest of their whanau (family).
