Woman tests positive for #date #rape drug after going to restaurant

SPRING PARK — A 37-year-old woman reported she had a date rape drug slipped into her drink at Lord Fletcher’s Restaurant on July 8.

Two weeks before at the same restaurant, police received a similar complaint from an anonymous caller.

“We are unsure if these two incidents are linked in any way,” police said.

According to WebMD, benzodiazepines are used as a date rape drug because of their ability to impair normal function. They’re added to alcoholic drinks and can be hard to detect.

Orono police have no known suspects at the time and are actively investigating.

With the press release, the department gave advice to reduce the chance of being given a drug without knowledge:

  • Don’t accept a drink from other people or take a drink from a stranger.
  • If someone offers to get you a drink, go with them to order the drink, watch it being poured and carry it yourself.
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended.
  • Stay with friends and look out for each other
