Special programming on 19th Century dining culture will be presented at Belle Mont Mansion by collector and historian George Terrell on Friday, June 24, and Saturday, June 25. The banquet table at Belle Mont will be set to show a multi-course Victorian meal to illustrate his talk. Tickets to his discussions will be sold in advance and will include a box lunch catered by Sweet Basil Alabama and served on the Belle Mont courtyard. A collector-led tour of the museum and the exhibit of antique and vintage china is included.

The Faith-Based Support Specialist (FBSS) Program is designed to bridge the gap between the faith community and the mental health field and looks to give church leaders of all faiths the opportunity to become skilled professionals in supporting those who seek help with substance abuse. The first FBSS Training conference for this area is Thursday and Friday, June 23-24 in Huntsville. It is free to participants and is sponsored by funding from the Foundation for Opioid Response Efforts.
Leaders who complete the program will have the knowledge and resources to point individuals in the direction of the most appropriate care for their individual situation, receiving a certification backed by the Alabama Department of Mental Health.

Survivors’ Day will be held at Singing River Cancer Center in Florence on Friday, June 24. Oncology patients are invited to attend the drive-thru event from 12-2pm. Singing River Cancer Center is located at 180 Cox Creek Parkway in Florence, across from TJ Maxx.

The Muscle Shoals Songwriters Festival early bird tickets went on sale June 15 for the upcoming festival, scheduled for November 4-5 in Muscle Shoals.

Last month KIX-96 and Big River Broadcasting’s beloved on-air personality “Fletch Brown” (aka Steifon J. Passmore), was diagnosed with cancer. Fletch was referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston which specializes in the treatment he needs. He will undergo a chemo schedule here in the Shoals that will last 4-5 months. Working regularly may be difficult as he deals with the side effects.
Following chemo, Fletch will have 3-4 weeks of radiation treatments in Houston. After the tumor has been reduced they will surgically remove it. At that point, the hope is that he will only have to travel to Houston every few months to check that it hasn’t returned, and he is cancer free!
Fletch/Steifon would literally give you the shirt off of his back. He is a valued member of our Shoals Community. He feels his best when he’s lifting you up. However, now he needs our help. The bills are coming in from only the last month and this is just for the testing they’ve done, he hasn’t been treated in any way yet. The Help Center in Florence we Will Be Open on the 3rd Saturday of each month on a permanent basis. The volunteers felt they could better serve their Saturday clients if they made the change to be open on 3rd Saturday every month to help avoid confusion. Hours are 8:30-10am – for food distribution ONLY. Saturday hours are for families who are unable to come from 8:30-noon on Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Shoals Scholar Dollars is an Education Foundation raising money to pay tuition at Northwest Shoals Community College and transfer scholarships to the University of North Alabama for Lauderdale and Colbert County students who meet certain criteria. Donate to Scholar Dollars at any participating financial institution the second Friday of each month.
LifeSouth is in emergency need for blood donors, as the national blood shortage continues, and asks donors to help by donating blood during their Back to School Blood Drive. Blood donors who give blood at any LifeSouth donor center or bloodmobile through Sunday, August 8 will help summer blood shortages, save lives, and receive a $20 e-gift card as a thank you for donating.
