Victims told they have a family member in jail.
Hamilton County, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public of a recent phone scam. Victims receiving these phone calls are being told that a family member has been arrested.
They state that the family member will be released from jail after the victim sends payment for bond.
The scammers often tell the victims to call someone who claims to be an attorney. The scammers then request cash and either pick it up at the victim’s residence or request it be mailed to an address, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office says.
The sheriff’s office has received several complaints regarding this scam. They say that callers often claim the family member has been arrested for a DUI or other crime.
The following is advice from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office on avoiding scams:
- NEVER give money to anyone without first verifying their statements and the legitimacy of the organization.
- Attorneys and bondsmen will never come to your residence to pick up money. They will not ask you to send money through UPS, FedEx, or any third-party driver.
- Attorneys and bondsmen will usually ask clients to meet at their official place of business for arranging payment.
- If you are told that a family member or friend has been arrested, call them first to verify their whereabouts.
The sheriff’s office is requesting that victims of scams contact their local law enforcement agency.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this scam.
