Sharing the update about discontinuation in South Africa, Hellman’s said on Facebook that it was “hard” to bid farewell to the mayonnaise but keeping in consideration the import costs, the product will be discontinued. The statement said, “A big thanks to our loyal fans for all the mayo love over the years”.
However, the post caused a stir online with several netizens thinking it would be discontinued across borders. While the post was removed from its Facebook page of Hellman’s, it caused confusion as the company did not mention that the product would be pulled back only from South African markets.
Hellman’s mayonnaise is a staple in kitchens across the globe and especially in America and it has been around for over a century. The rumour that it was being discontinued in the US left Americans in a state of panic. One of the users speculated that Hellman’s mayo is “going out of business” while others said that it was not what they wanted to hear in 2023.
