James, McQuiggan, a security awareness advocate at KnowBe4, told The U.S. Sun he advises against keeping unused of outdated apps on your device.

He said: “Apps that should be removed from your phone are unused or outdated apps that you’re not using.

“They contain information about you and can take up space on the phone.”

He added: “It’s a good idea to only install apps from reputable sources like the Google Play store or Apple’s App Store.

“Unless you completely trust the app, you risk installing malicious software, backdoors or other code that aims to steal your data or damage your phone.”

McQuiggan also stressed the importance of not giving away too many permissions to apps.

Scam apps often ask to access unnecessary permissions on your phone like your camera, microphone, and location.

If a torch app is asking for access to your microphone and it’s not clear why, that could be a dangerous sign that something is very wrong.

The expert says: “Consider the app’s function and what it needs for it to function.

“Social media apps love to have access to all your contacts to “help” you find other friends.

“You can search for your friends without delivering all your contacts from your contact list and protect yourself and your friends.”

It’s also advisable to take reviews of apps seriously.

Familiarize yourself with content before you put it on your device.

If you’ve never heard of it and no one else has reviewed it, this can be a big red flag of a scam.
