By Akshaya Nath: A 22-year-old man from Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore was cheated out of Rs 7.84 lakh by a scammer when he was using a dating website.

On October 15, Thiyagu, the 22-year-old victim, was surfing the Locanto dating website on Google. Soon after, he was contacted by an unknown man who introduced himself as Kumar and told the victim that he would arrange a callgirl’s service and massage service for him.

Based on that, the 22-year-old went to a star hotel in Coimbatore as instructed by the unknown person and even sent Rs 2,500.

Later, the accused asked the victim to send money for the room, the woman’s safety, etc. In the process, the victim, in a police complaint, said that he had transferred Rs 7,84,000 in total to the unknown man.

Only much later did the victim realise that he had been cheated. The 22-year-old then registered a complaint with the Cybercrime police.

Police have registered cases under Sections 420 of IPC and 66 (D) of the IT Amendment Act of 2008. Further investigations are underway and police officials are hunting for the absconding accused.
