New to streaming: What to watch on Netflix NZ, Neon and more this week | #datingscams | #lovescams | #facebookscams

What are you going to be watching this week? We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Apple TV+, Neon and TVNZ+.

The biggies

The Horror of Dolores Roach (on Prime Video from July 7)

Prime Video seems to be killing it with wild concepts recently. This one follows Dolores Roach (the excellent Justina Machado from Netflix’s One Day at a Time) who returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a 16-year prison sentence. She reunites with an old friend, working as a masseuse from his basement, but when her already precarious situation is threatened, she goes to shocking extremes. It’s based on the Gimlet Media podcast of the same name, and trust me, you do not want to be spoiled for this one. / Sam Brooks

Then You Run (on TVNZ+ from July 8)

This thriller is based on Zoran Drvenkar’s book You (no, not the Netflix You) and follows a group of close-knit rebellious London teenagers who find themselves on the run with three kilos of heroin and deadly criminals at their heels. Things get even darker once the estranged father of one of their number is found dead. The shows promises “dark humour, bloody action and shocking twists”. / SB

Deep Fake Love (on Netflix from July 6)

“Five couples put their trust to the test in this steamy reality series, where deepfake technology blurs the line of truth and lies in a cash prize game.” If I wasn’t already sure we were in a dystopia, that premise sure convinces me. 100,000 Euros are at stake in this Spanish reality series, along with my faith in the human race. / SB

The notables

Everyone Else Burns (on Neon from July 5)

Simon Bird, best known for The Inbetweeners, stars as the patriarch of this coming-of-age sitcom about a Manchester family who are part of a puritanical Christian sect. This show has received rave reviews back home in the UK, in particular noting that it never goes for easy jokes about religion, and it’s full of heart. Kate O’Flynn, Lolly Adefope and Amy James-Kelly also star. / SB

Elementary (all seasons on TVNZ+ from July 3)

Hear me out: Elementary is a better show than Sherlock. Despite the lack of a BBC pedigree, this US adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, with Jonny Lee Miller as the titular detective and Lucy Liu as Watson always seemed truer to the spirit of the books. There are a lot of episodes to get through, but the chemistry of Miller and Liu as they wade through episode-of-the-week mysteries is more than sufficient to get you through. / SB

Duck and Goose (season two on Apple TV+ from July 7)

This animated shows for preschoolers is adapted from Tad Hill’s popular books of the same name, and follows Duck and Goose, two best friends who don’t always see “beak to beak” (cute!). Despite this, they manage to bring out the best in each other. If you’ve already worn out every episode of Bluey several times, this looks like it could be a good thing to substitute in, if you have a child, are a child, or are an adult with a childlike sense of wonder./ SB

The films

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On (on Prime Video from July 5 and Neon from July 8)

Alex Casey from our group think last year: “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On is a perfect film (and not just because it is under 98 minutes long). It is sweet without ever being cloying, trades in nostalgia without ever getting into desperado Space Jam (2022) territory, and gently asks us to think about much of our modern online lives without ever feeling like preachy #lookup bullcrap. All while raising awareness for seashell carsickness? I hope the Academy is listening.”

Robots (on Prime Video from July 7)

This sci-fi romcom sees Jack Whitehall and Shailene Woodley star as a “womaniser” and “gold digger” respectively, who own physically identical robots (so… clones?). After deciding to go on a date together, they both end up sending their doubles, and lo and behold, their doubles fall in love and ditch their masters. Sounds cute! Not Marcel the Shell level cute, but somewhere thereabouts. / SB

Don’t Worry Darling (on Neon from July 4)

It wasn’t even a year ago that this film was the source of a million memes. Then it came out and people realised that it was just fine! Olivia Wilde’s sophomore film sees Florence Pugh and Harry Styles play Alice and Jack Chambers, a couple who live in an idealistic company town in 1950s California. Alas, all is not as it seems! Chances are you if you were interested in this film, at all, you’ve already seen it. But if you haven’t, get thee to a screen with a Neon subscription./ SB
