QuickCheck: Are part-time job scams becoming rampant? | #whatsapp | #lovescams | #phonescams

THE offer of a high-paying job is sometimes too hard to resist.

Unsolicited advertisements sometimes are sent to unsuspecting victims, among them offering commissions for certain tasks performed.

So did a man really lose almost RM100,000 to a part-time-job scam?

VERDICT:

TRUE

Seri Alam police Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said a 41-year-old man who works as a supervisor at a private company had lodged a police report claiming that he was duped in a job scam.

In a statement on April 18, Supt Mohd Sohaimi said that in the April 13 incident, the victim had received a WhatsApp message from a company offering a part-time job.

The job offered commissions upon completion of a task. The complainant was then added to a Telegram group where the instructions related for the tasks were relayed.

He said the victim had completed a package of four tasks involving RM92,220.

“Between April 16 and 17, 2023, the victim made 10 transactions totalling RM92,220 to six different accounts,” he said.

The victim became suspicious when he did not receive the returns or commissions promised, and ended up paying another RM7,580 to recoup his “capital” invested and commission.

Mohd Sohaimi said the case is being investigated for fraud and the mule accounts angle is also being probed.

“The police would like to advise the people to be more cautious and to not easily trust online job offers which promise huge and quick returns,” he said.

He also advised the public to use the services offered by the commercial investigation department, such as the National Scam Response Centre, CCID Infoline, Semak Mule and police Facebook pages on information related to commercial crime before making any transactions.
